My practice is grounded in a phenomenological approach, which emphasizes an immersive experience through the process of painting. By incorporating the concept of the expanded field of painting into my practice, I create site-adjusted installations that utilize light, temperature, and traditional painting techniques to create immersive experiences.
My paintings use geometrical compositions that draw upon iconic optical strategies, including chromatic vibrations, hard-edged forms, and geometrical composition. This situates my work in dialogue with the tenets of Modernist abstraction, while also allowing for exploration and interrogation of the potentialities of abstraction today. The mathematical gridded composition of my paintings is complemented by a conscious approach to surface activation, achieved through the interplay of matte and glossy finishes. This creates a dynamic relationship between the painting's surface and the viewer, making the work responsive to light and body movement.
The encounters I've had in nature, from my childhood canoeing adventure, daily walks in Pacific Spirit Park, to the tranquil pace of morning bird watching or twilight skiing, have influenced my perception and deepened my appreciation of my environment. Natural phenomena serve as a wellspring of inspiration, as I attentively observe these subtle occurrences that collapse time into singular moments of wonder. This embodied knowledge serves as a guiding force in my art practice, influencing my choice of subject matter, mathematical composition, and color palettes that follows the seasonal changes.
My work aims to examine the relationship between the viewer, the artwork, and the space in which it is presented, gaining insights into the ways in which I can use this relationship to create an interactive experience for the viewer. Originally from Montreal and a Francophone, I currently live and creates work on the ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish Peoples in Vancouver, BC.
