Chasing the light

A site-responsive installation presented as part of Biometaphysicalmateria, the MFA 2023 Thesis Exhibition, at ECU in March 2023.

Chasing the light 2022-2024

Initially envisioned as a thesis research project in painting, Chasing the Light evolved into a multifaceted series of paintings presented as a site-responsive installation featuring:

  • two large-scale oil on canvas works (Chasing the Light #6 and #7)
  • a custom relighting of the exhibition space
  • a light intervention at the campus entrance titled Perceptual Transition
  • and a dedicated room for the stop-motion video installation titled A Sequence of Time

Relighting of the Michael O’Brian Exhibition Commons for Chasing the light, 2023
Installation Elements: LED ceiling lights, track lighting, dimmers, light gels and filters.

To enhance the viewing experience, I implemented a complete relighting of the MOEC, transforming the typically bright, even lighting into a more dynamic environment. I reduced the ceiling light intensity, introduced uneven track lighting, and added gels to calibrate the light's colors and intensity. These adjustments aimed to create an immersive atmosphere that encouraged deeper interaction with the diverse art installations created by the 13-member cohort. This lighting intervention guided the viewer’s perception, enhancing the overall sensory experience of the exhibition space. The images below illustrate the contrast between the original lighting conditions and the space after my relighting intervention.

Light Intervention for Chasing the light titled
Perceptual Transition, 2023
Installation Elements: LED tube lights, light stands, scrim material, blackout fabric, sandbags.

Perceptual Transition was a light intervention installed at the main entrance of the ECU campus, designed to transform the space into a dynamic and immersive environment. Using colored LED lighting, the installation created a haptic experience that engaged visitors' senses as they moved through the entrance. The goal was to amplify the transition between the external world and the exhibition space.

Note: The images below were documented during the trial night. Unfortunately, I was unable to photograph the final installation, which included several adjustments, such as the removal of posters, plants, and furniture from the entrance, as well as the replacement of the fabric on the left wall to eliminate visible creases.

Video Installation: A Sequence of Time within Chasing the Light
Installation Elements: Stop-motion video, 10 x 20 black rug, loungers, table, percolator with herbal tea (cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves), biodegradable cups, square recycle bin, warm reading light.

A Sequence of Time was an immersive video installation presented in a large lecture room adjacent to the MOEC. The room featured a large fold-down screen, a polished concrete floor, and a wall of windows overlooking the main gallery space.

The space was arranged with a large black rug and four loungers positioned toward the screen while allowing room for conversation. Visitors could enter through two doors: a warm yellow light illuminated one entrance through an elbow-shaped hallway, while a cool bluish tone lit the other. Upon entering the warm-lit passage, guests were greeted by the soothing aroma of spiced herbal tea. A tea station near the entrance featured a hot percolator, compostable cups, and a small reading light casting a warm glow over the pouring handle of the percolator.

The environment encouraged a slow, reflective pace, with empty cups carefully left in a nearby recycle bin. The stop-motion video title A sequence of time played on a continuous loop without sound, inviting viewers to experience the passage of time through a specific sequence that recreated my thesis research.
